Mission
The Pittsburgh AIA chapter leadership has the honor of jurying applicants for the Stewart L. Brown Memorial Scholarship, which supports a Carnegie Mellon Architecture student in the fourth year of the Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch) program. The scholarship was first established in 1951 in memory of Stewart L. Brown, the only member of AIA Pittsburgh to make the ultimate sacrifice serving in World War II.
The Stewart L. Brown Memorial Scholarship recognizes professional promise in terms of attitudes and scholastic achievement. It is awarded each year to a student interested in pursuing professional practice after graduation.
Evaluation Criteria
To be considered for the Stewart L. Brown Memorial Scholarship, applicants must submit a complete application that includes the following information:
- A statement (200 words maximum) that articulates their interest in professional practice
- Anonymous résumé without their name and contact information
- Anonymous 11"x17" landscape format design portfolio (<20 MB, 25 pages maximum) that includes a table of contents and the following items: 1) the professional practice statement; 2) résumé; and 3) design portfolio
Note: Applicants may include collaborative projects, but must state which projects were done in collaboration with others. Applicants should only show work examples that they directly contributed to. For each collaborative project, the applicant must indicate the number of all authors and which aspect(s) of the project they worked on.
A jury convened by Pittsburgh AIA chapter leadership reviews the applications and selects up to four (4) students for interviews. The interviews facilitate the determination of professional promise and ultimate selection of the awardee.

Spring 2024 Award Amount: $10,000 (one (1) available)

The Stewart L. Brown Memorial Scholarship is open to all fourth-year Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch) students.
