General Commencement Information | Cap & Gown Information


Important Dates & Deadlines for Graduating Students

Commencement Fair | Wed 20 & Thu 21 March from 10:00am-6:00pm
Rangos Ballroom, Cohon University Center
All graduating students should plan to stop by the Commencement Fair to purchase and pick up their cap and gown for commencement and shop for Class of 2019 memorabilia. All graduating students will also be able to verify their diploma information, ask questions about commencement weekend, and prepare for life after graduation.

Verify Diploma Information | Due Fri 22 March
All graduating students should check that their name, degree, and other diploma information is accurate by the date listed above. Verify online in SIO (login required).

Register for the Doctor's Hooding Ceremony (PhD Only) | Due Fri 22 March
PhD students participating in the Doctor's Hooding Ceremony will need to submit their name, the name of their faculty hooder(s), and other information by the deadline listed above. Register online.

Commencement Scripts | Due Fri 05 April
As part of the SoA Diploma Ceremony, a brief message is read about each School of Architecture student as they receive their diploma from the school head. Please submit the form which you should have received by email, by the date listed above.

Order Cap & Gown | Deadline Fri 19 April @ 5:00pm
There are a few ways students can purchase a cap and gown, which is required regalia for the SoA Diploma Ceremony and Main CMU Commencement Ceremony. More information available on the CMU website.

  • Attend the Commencement Fair, Wednesday 20 March & Thursday 21 March from 10:00am-6:00pm in the Rangos Ballroom, Cohon University Center. All graduating students should plan to stop by the Commencement Fair to purchase and pick up their cap and gown for commencement and shop for Class of 2019 memorabilia. All graduating students will also be able to verify their diploma information, ask questions about commencement weekend, and prepare for life after graduation.

  • Visit the lower level of The University Store during regular store hours between Friday 22 March and Wednesday 15 May.

  • Order online, available Friday 22 March through Friday 19 April by 5:00pm. Ship directly to the University Store or to your home for a fee.

  • Stop by Cap and Gown Distribution over commencement weekend. Located in the McKenna, Peter, Wright Rooms on the second floor of the Cohon University Center. Hours: Friday 17 May 10:00am-4:00pm | Saturday 18 May 8:00am-2:30pm | Sunday 19 May 9:00-11:00am

RSVP for SoA Diploma Ceremony & Reception | Due Tue 30 April
The form to submit your commencement script also serves as your RSVP for the reception following the ceremony. Please indicate if you will be attending the SoA Diploma Ceremony and the reception directly following by submitting the form which you should have received by email, by the date listed above.

John Knox Shear Award (B.Arch Only) | Applications Due Mon 13 May @ 11:59pm
The John Knox Shear Award is the highest honor granted by the faculty of the School of Architecture to a graduating student in the Bachelor of Architecture program. The award recognizes exceptional design and representation as demonstrated through studio work within the last two years of the B.Arch program. In enabling a substantial travel experience, the award encourages an understanding and analysis of the built environment through direct engagement. The awardee, as selected by SoA faculty, is announced during the SoA Commencement Ceremony. The award amount is $10,000. Outstanding Academic Coursework | Due Wed 15 May @ 12:00pm
If you have any outstanding coursework, missing grades, etc. on your academic record, please have these issues resolved by no later than the due date listed above. We will not be able to certify you for graduation if there are any missing requirements. If you are not certified by Friday 17 May you will not receive your diploma on Saturday 18 May.

Final Billing for All Graduating Students | Due Wed 15 May @ 5:00pm
The last day to make Shop, dFAB Lab, and plotting purchases charged to your student account is Thursday, May 9. Final charges will hit your student account on Saturday, May 11. Please check your student account for any additional costs that may have been charged to your account over the final weeks of the semester. Payment for outstanding charges is due to the HUB no later than close of business (5:00pm EST) on Wednesday, May 15. If you have any unpaid balances on your student account after this date, you will not receive your diploma on Saturday, May 18. If you are graduating and still want to make purchases in one of these areas, or have any questions or concerns, please first contact David Koltas at dkoltas@andrew.cmu.edu.

Photography
The School of Architecture has photographs taken of the Diploma Ceremony. High-resolution images of graduates receiving their diplomas are made available to students and their families following the day’s event.

Videography
The School of Architecture Diploma Ceremony will be live-streamed at this link on the day of the event. The recording is made available following the event as a free download on the SoA’s Vimeo page.

& Reception

9:00am | College of Fine Arts Honors Ceremony
Chosky Theater, Purnell Center for the Arts
Undergraduate students receiving university and/or college honors will be recognized during the CFA Honors Ceremony. Graduates will be presented with honors medallions and cords, which should be worn during the SoA Diploma Ceremony on Saturday and CMU Commencement Ceremony on Sunday. Families and guests are encouraged to attend. Graduates are not required to wear caps and gowns for this event.

Immediately following the CFA Honors Ceremony, a reception will be held in the lobby of the Purnell Center for the Arts.

All graduating students report to the second floor lobby of Chosky Theater to prepare for the SoA diploma ceremony. Please arrive dressed for the diploma ceremony in your caps, gowns, cords, etc.

11:00am | Doors Open for Diploma Ceremony

Doors to Chosky Theater open for guests at approximately 11:00am for the SoA Diploma Ceremony. Please no food, drinks, or pets in Chosky Theater.

11:30am | School of Architecture Diploma Ceremony

Robing is for doctor's candidates and faculty hooders only. Guests should proceed directly to the ceremony.

Doors to the Carnegie Music Hall open for guests at 3:30pm for the Doctor's Hooding Ceremony. Please do not arrive prior to this time.

At this ceremony, all CMU PhD graduates will be individually hooded and recognized. Tickets are not required for this event and there is no limit on the number of guests a student may bring, however seating is first come first served. The ceremony will also be webcast on this site via YouTube.

Gesling Stadium opens to guests at 9:00am.

10:00am | Robing 
Robing for all commencement ceremony participants occurs at various locations on campus. Robing is for all graduates and ceremony participants only. Guests should proceed directly to the stadium.

10:15am | Guests Seated for Ceremony
Gesling Stadium
All guests must be seated by 10:15am for the procession of graduates into Gesling Stadium.

11:00am | CMU Commencement Ceremony
Gesling Stadium
All graduating students at CMU will be celebrated during the University-wide Commencement Ceremony. The ceremony begins with the procession of graduates and will include addresses from the student speaker and keynote speaker, as well as a charge from the president of the university. Tickets are not required for this event and there is no limit on the number of guests a student may bring, however seating is first come first served. The ceremony takes place outdoors in Gesling Stadium, rain or shine! The stadium is NOT covered and there is no shade. An indoor simulcast and a webcast will be available for those who wish to be seated indoors.
