Master of Advanced Architecture Design (MAAD)

Application Requirements & Process


Before our online application opens in October:

  • Review the MAAD program information;

  • Take the TOEFL or IELTS if you are a non-native English speaker;

  • Prepare a personal essay (1000-1500 words) that includes two parts:

    1) A biographical narrative describing your background and your most formative experiences to date that have led you to pursue studying advanced architecture at CMU; and

    2) A statement of purpose that indicates why you would like to enroll in the program, who among the faculty you would like to work with, and what topics you could envision pursuing in your culminating design research project.

  • Complete a portfolio (maximum file size of 20MB with a maximum resolution of 150dpi) to be uploaded as one PDF to SlideRoom; and

  • Ask three professors or employers permission to assign them as references.


Beginning around October 15:

Begin your online application. You do not have to complete all sections of the online application at once. You can revisit your Carnegie Mellon School of Architecture application in SlideRoom until the final submission of your application. Please be sure to submit your application by the application deadline.

Applicants are strongly encouraged to submit complete applications well in advance of the January 5 application deadline for evaluation by our graduate admission committee.


Before our application deadline of JANUARY 5:

  • GRE scores are optional and not required; applicants can provide their scores if they wish. If you choose to provide GRE scores, contact Education Testing Services to send your GRE scores (and TOEFL scores) directly to our department, using the institution code 2074, GRE department code 4401, and TOEFL department code 12. Or contact the British Council to send your IELTS scores to:

  • Assign three references to your application.

  • Upload the following:

    1. Statement of Purpose

    2. Copy of unofficial transcript(s). (Transcripts of completed degrees must list degree and conferral date(s).)

    3. Copy of optional GRE scores if you wish to provide them

    4. Copy of TOEFL/IELTS score report(s) (if needed)

    5. Portfolio (maximum file size of 20MB with a maximum resolution of 150dpi)

    6. Resume/CV

    7. Optional Supporting Documents

  • Pay the $75 application fee (online)

  • Verify that you have completed all of the above. Our graduate committee will only review your application once we have received all required documents.
