APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS & PROCESS

 

BEFORE OUR ONLINE APPLICATION OPENS IN OCTOBER:

  • Review the AECM program information;

  • Take the GRE exam as early as possible (and the TOEFL or IELTS if you are a non-native English speaker); and

  • Ask permission from three referees who can support your application before assigning them as references.

 

Beginning AROUND OCTOBER 15:

Begin the MSAECM application or the PhD-AECM application. You do not have to complete all sections of the online application at once. You can revisit your Carnegie Mellon School of Architecture application in SlideRoom until the final submission of your application. Please be sure to submit your application by the application deadline.

 

BEFORE OUR APPLICATION DEADLINE OF January 5:

  • Contact Education Testing Services to send your GRE scores (and TOEFL scores) directly to our department, using the institution code 2074, GRE department code 4401, and TOEFL department code 12. Or contact the British Council to send your IELTS scores to:

  • Assign three references to your application

  • Upload the following:

    1. Personal Statement

Master of Advanced Architecture Design (MAAD)

Application Requirements & Process

 

Before our online application opens in October:

  • Review the MAAD program information;

  • Take the TOEFL or IELTS if you are a non-native English speaker;

  • Prepare a personal essay (1000-1500 words) that includes two parts:

    1) A biographical narrative describing your background and your most formative experiences to date that have led you to pursue studying advanced architecture at CMU; and

    2) A statement of purpose that indicates why you would like to enroll in the program, who among the faculty you would like to work with, and what topics you could envision pursuing in your culminating design research project.

  • Complete a portfolio (maximum file size of 20MB with a maximum resolution of 150dpi) to be uploaded as one PDF to SlideRoom; and

  • Ask three professors or employers permission to assign them as references.

Master of Architecture (M.Arch)

Application Requirements & Process

 

Before our online application opens in October:

  • Review the M.Arch program information and eligibility requirements. For enrollment in the 2019-2020 academic year, admission will be limited to students who qualify for the advanced standing, 2-year track (Track 2 as described, here).

  • Take the TOEFL exam or IELTS if you are a non-native English speaker;

  • Prepare a personal essay (1000-1500 words) that includes two parts:

    1) A biographical narrative describing your background and your most formative experiences to date that have led you to pursue studying architecture at CMU; and

    2) A statement of purpose outlining why CMU is a good fit for you at this point in your career, what specific focus areas you may want to explore at CMU, and your aspirations and plans for the future after leaving CMU, including how you hope to position yourself in the many different fields related to architecture.

  • Complete a 25-30 individual page portfolio (no two-page spreads) as one SINGLE PDF document (no more than 20MB in size, 150 dpi - no exceptions) to be uploaded to your application in SlideRoom; and

  • Ask three professors or employers permission to assign them as references.

You do not have to complete all sections of the online application at once. We are looking to enroll a diverse group of students from around the world who are comfortable working in innovative ways and who seek to push the boundaries of the discipline.

Applicants are strongly encouraged to submit complete applications well in advance of the January 5 application deadline for evaluation by our graduate admission committee.
