This summer, explore the intersection of ART + TECHNOLOGY with the Center for Architecture Explorations.

The Center for Architecture Explorations (CAE) provides a variety of summer programming for K-12 students both at Carnegie Mellon and our partner locations, the Carnegie Museum of Art in Oakland, and Assemble, a community space for arts and technology located in Garfield.

June 10  - June 14

Out-of-This-World Architecture

Ages 11-13

9:00am-3:00pm, pre- and post-camp available upon request

Price: $255 (Members: $230)

Location:  Carnegie Museum Of Art, 4400 Forbes Ave, Pittsburgh, Pa 15213

If space aliens built a city, what would it look like? Use your imagination and your most far-out ideas to create a city from another planet. What do your outer-space friends need in their city? How is it different from or similar to the world you live in on earth? Study the exhibition of award-winning architects in the galleries to look for interesting shapes, colors, and materials to incorporate into your design.

Dream House Architects

Ages 8-10

Location:  Carnegie Museum Of Art, 4400 Forbes Ave, Pittsburgh, Pa 15213

Design the house of your dreams! Learn how architects combine the functional needs of a building with designs that excite our imaginations. Does your house have a slide at the back door? Is there a room just for your toys? Explore creative ways to design and build your house using a variety of architectural drawing and model-making methods.

What will the earth look like in 2050? How do you grow food an ever-changing urban environment? Join us as we imagine and explore the future of urban planning, community agriculture, and virtual reality (VR). Learn about imaginative storytellers and dreaming, scheming makers who are already designing the possibilities of other worlds. Projects will include creating VR landscapes, building a simple DIY radio, and more!

Get your computer coding, virtual reality, and circuitry skills to invent new games! Meet scientists, designers, technologists and engineers, and collaborate with your peers to discover how you can survive the future!

ALCOSAN Clean Water Academy

Ages 14-18

9:00am-3:00pm

Price: There is no fee to attend, however students must register at the website listed

Location:  Margaret Morrison Carnegie Hall, Pittsburgh, PA 15213 (at the corner of Margaret Morrison St and Tech St)

The ALCOSAN Clean Water Academy is a weeklong STEM enrichment program that exposes students to science, technology, engineering, and math content relating to wastewater treatment. Topics include engineering, chemistry, microbiology, and technology.

Students will begin the week with an in-depth tour of ALCOSAN’s wastewater treatment plant and onsite laboratory. They will also engage with a wide variety of STEM professionals including engineers, scientists, information technologists, and tradespeople. Students will participate in hands-on lab and engineering activities as well as a special technology project. University faculty will teach some classes and lab sessions.

Use unique tools like VR/AR and 3-D scanning apps in CMU’s computer labs to design complex 3-D forms that inspire future buildings. Use these projects to build your portfolio and demonstrate new skills.

High Tech Architecture

Discover how technology has transformed our ability to design everyday objects and spaces. Use high tech tools to design complex 3-D forms that inspire future buildings, and design your own dream house for the future. View the work of award-winning architects at CMOA as inspiration. Use these projects to build your portfolio and demonstrate new skills. This workshop meets on Carnegie Mellon’s campus. Student will make regular walking trips to the museum.
