Above: Announcing the New Director of the Remaking Cities Institute

Carnegie Mellon Architecture is pleased to announce Stefan Gruber as the new director of the Remaking Cities Institute.

Carnegie Mellon Architecture’s research centers have a rich and venerable history of leading the architecture discipline in research excellence in sustainable, computational and urban design.

Our faculty members combine their deep expertise in architectural subdisciplines (the “vertical” dimension) with broad, collaborative interconnectedness across campus and the globe (the “horizontal” dimension). The result? Our four research centers push the boundaries of architecture, forge connections beyond the discipline and draw government, industry and nonprofit partners to fund and apply our work.

This culture of inquiry isn’t limited to the graduate programs or sequestered research labs: the faculty member who manages a million-dollar sustainability project in the morning teaches an undergraduate design studio in the afternoon. Students at all levels are encouraged to explore design as research; the school’s legendary research excellence permeates the entire curriculum and every student’s education.

teamLab (f. 2001) is an international art collective. Daisuke Sakai, a co-founder of teamLab, spoke at CMU on November 14, 2023. ‘Relationships Among People’ is one of teamLab’s concepts which aims to explore a new relationship among people, and to make the presence of others a positive experience through digital art.

CodeLab

The Computational Design Lab (Code Lab) at Carnegie Mellon University is a multidisciplinary collaborative formed to address complex issues at the intersection of art, design, architecture, and engineering.

Nida Rehman's Work on Environmental Justice Recognized

Assistant Professor Nida Rehman is a recipient of the 2022 SOM Foundation Research Prize, which will support a collaborative project entitled "Taking Back the Air" with North Braddock Residents For Our Future and General Sisters.

Remaking Cities Institute (RCI)

The Remaking Cities Institute (RCI) is the School of Architecture’s research center for urbanism, participatory action and community design.

RCI’s mission is to catalyze spatial equity and resilience in the future of cities. It provides a forum for transdisciplinary discourse and collaboration, radical imagination, creative advocacy, and place-based activism in response to the most urgent contemporary issues in urbanism. It contributes to the Pittsburgh region’s revitalization and advances community leadership in that process.

Applied Architectural Robotics Collective (AARC)

The Applied Architectural Robotics Collective (AARC) at Carnegie Mellon University investigates the application of industrial robots in building and construction.

Regenerative Structures Laboratory (RSL)

The Regenerative Structures Laboratory (RSL) at Carnegie Mellon University pushes the boundaries of computational structural design, regenerative alternative building materials and sustainable construction practices through emerging digital technologies that are scalable, affordable and accessible.
